If you want the type of quality of Loblaws, and a squeaky clean store, then you'll have to pay Loblaws prices. But for me, I have a smaller income, and when I shop intelligently, then I have always been happy with Farmer Als.

The staff has always been very friendly to me and my family. I really hope they are able to continue to stay in business, especially with the ever increasing government control and demonization of small family owned and operated businesses.

While the renovation of Farmer's Al was needed, the reduction in size of the building and items sold has made it not worth shopping here anymore. They still have a butchery and bakery on site which are both great, the lack of selection of good quality meats and unique food items that they no longer sell is disappointing. The final nail in the coffin is the store's closing hours, especially during the weekdays, are just so inconvenient that its not worth bothering shopping here when there are 4-5 other markets close by that are opened to a reasonable hour.

I was sad when I found out they renovated the place to get smaller, but I also know to stay in business, sometimes you have to downsize. So while it is much smaller, it's better to be smaller, and still here, than to be gone entirely.

Now here's my opinion of Farmer Als. You do need to be careful, and pick and choose what you buy. I have never had much of a problem with it, but a few things I have had to throw out (mainly because it gets buried in my freezer)

Save your money if you're after the $1.99/lb "lean" ground beef. The patties I made were floating in grease by the time I pan fried them. Good flavor, but no way is it lean ground beef. The fresh chicken breasts were nice but any frozen chicken I've bought has been very salty & had a weird spongy texture when thawed. Drive around the corner & go to Highland Packers instead.
